What types of membership are available?

We offer membership categories for every career stage, including students, graduates, associates, accredited and retired people. We also offer body corporate memberships for businesses employing building surveyors. Each level provides tailored benefits to help build capability, credibility and professional connections throughout your career.

What is the difference between practicing and non-practicing membership?

The key difference is whether you're actively working as a building surveyor.

Practicing members are actively working in building surveying roles, including statutory services, consultancy or policy. This includes accredited members and body corporate memberships, and requires accreditation and compliance with the AIBS Professional Standards Scheme.

Non-practicing members aren't actively working in building surveying roles. This category includes students, graduates working towards accreditation, associates with a professional interest in the field, retired members and academics. Non-practicing members receive all the same benefits but cannot vote or hold elected office within AIBS.

How do I apply for membership?

Joining is simple. Just review our membership categories to find the right fit, prepare your academic and professional credentials and complete our online application form. Your membership will start once your application is approved and your fee payment received. Keep an eye on your emails for updates.

Do I need to be accredited to join AIBS?

It depends on your role. If you're actively practicing as a building surveyor, you'll join as an , which requires meeting our accreditation standards. If you're a student, graduate or someone with a professional interest in building surveying, you can join without accreditation. Accreditation is the national benchmark for professional excellence and is a goal many members work towards, but you don't need it to join as a non-practicing member.

How is AIBS different from other professional bodies?

AIBS is Australia's only national peak body exclusively for building surveyors, with a government-approved Professional Standards Scheme that sets the benchmark for professional practice. We're the trusted voice shaping policy, the NCC and state reforms, giving you direct influence on the standards that impact your work.

I work in local government. Is AIBS relevant for me?

Absolutely. AIBS provides practical tools, regulatory guidance and a voice in policy that directly supports your work in the public sector.

As a practicing building surveyor, you'll join as an Accredited Member, and while most practicing members are covered by the AIBS Professional Standards Scheme, public sector employees can be exempt as the scheme is designed for private practice.

You'll gain access to tailored CPD that keeps you current on NCC updates and jurisdictional changes, plus a network of peers who understand the unique pressures and responsibilities of council roles.

Can I access CPD and events as a non-member?

Yes. AIBS events and training are open to non-members, making it easy to experience the quality and relevance of our programs before joining. However, members receive priority access, discounted rates and exclusive resources that enhance career-long learning.
