Membership
If you’re looking for more specific guidance, you’ll find extra FAQs on the Membership Overview page and on each membership type page.
Who can become an AIBS member?
AIBS membership is open to people entering or working in the building surveying profession, as well as professionals in related fields. This includes students studying building surveying, recent graduates, practising building surveyors and associates such as architects, engineers and other built environment professionals with a connection to the field.
What types of membership does AIBS offer?
AIBS offers membership options for every stage of your career, including student, graduate, associate, accredited, retired and academic membership. We also offer accredited body corporate membership for organisations employing building surveyors. See the membership page for more information.
Do I need to be accredited to join AIBS?
Not always. Practising building surveyors should join as Accredited Members, which requires meeting AIBS accreditation standards. Students, graduates, academics and associates can join without accreditation.
How much does membership cost?
Membership fees vary by category. Current pricing is available in the AIBS fee schedule.
How do I apply for membership?
Choose the membership type that best fits your experience, complete the online application and provide any required documents. Your membership begins once your application is approved and your fee is paid.
How long does it take for my membership application to be processed?
Processing times depend on the type of membership you’re applying for.
Non-practising membership (student, graduate, associate, academic, retired):
These applications are usually processed within two weeks, provided all required documents are supplied at the time of application.
Practising membership (Accredited Member):
Applications that include accreditation take longer because they require a detailed assessment of your qualifications, experience and compliance documents by the National Accreditation Panel, which meets monthly. Processing times vary depending on the volume of applications and whether additional information is needed but generally takes four to six weeks.
To avoid delays, make sure all documents listed in the application checklist are included when you submit your form.
