Open letter to Councils and OCBA regarding prefabricated roof trusses On the 20 February 2008, AIBS (SA Chapter) forwarded an open letter to all Council CEO’s and the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs (OCBA) regarding the potential for structural failure of prefabricated roof trusses in buildings constructed between 1970 and 1997. The letters were prompted by advice received by the AIBS that the extent of the problem was no longer limited to large clear span buildings, as previously thought, but included a significant number of dwellings as well. AIBS commended those Councils that have amended their inspection policies and instigated programs for investigating buildings that may be at risk; and called on Councils and OCBA to work with AIBS to raise awareness of the issue among existing and potential homeowners OCBA and Councils were asked to consider providing a link to the Planning SA webpage that addresses the truss issue. This webpage can be accessed by clicking here.

This issue was further highlighted at the 2008 AIBS South Australian Conference by a paper delivered by Adjunct Associate Professor Justin Cole from the University of South Australia titled Residential roof trusses: The financial implications – a case study. Adjunct Associate Professor Cole has had first-hand experience with prefabricated roof truss issues. This experience resulted in costs of $35 000 to rectify his own home.
